Some of best products from G&L Guitars & BBE Sound

G&L Guitars & BBE Sound Inc

USA made, at affordable prices

It is hard to imagine how the guys at G&L can make guitars from scratch in their factory in Fullerton, Southern California, each one meticulously checked at each stage, pleked during manufacture and finished to such a high degree yet without the 'boutique' price tag.
During a visit to California we were able to visit the G&L factory and be given a private tour of the facility courtesy of Spencer Brown. More about that soon, make a point of visiting that page to see inside the workshop where Leo Fender designed and tested his later work.

BBE VariComp VC-3080 OTA Compressor Pedal

Classic OTA Compression with Added Versatility and Modern Reliability

The BBE VariComp compressor is inspired by some of the coolest vintage compressor pedals around: the old Ross compressor and the early MXR Dynacomp. Think of that sweet, spongy compression in “Sultans of Swing” and “Sweet Home Alabama” and you’ll get the idea. VariComp holds true to those iconic originals by using an authentic new old stock (NOS) CA3080 Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) analog device. But VariComp is not about just copying an old design – it’s about taking the best elements of old favorites and improving the breed.

VariComp goes the classics one better with an Attack control for greater flexibility. Dialing up the Attack makes the sound a little “tighter,” but dialing it back offers an even “spongier” sound. In other words, that Sultan can be more swingin’.

VariComp has a consistency and ruggedness that are the hallmark of BBE pedals, designed for guitarists whose gigs are as demanding as their ears. With a robust mil-spec circuit board with fat signal traces, 1% metal-film resistors for consistency and true hardwire bypass, making VariComp an ideal OTA compressor for touring.

FEATURES

  • Output, attack and threshold controls
  • NOS CA3080 OTA (Operational Transconductance Amplifier)
  • 470K input impedance for vintage correct pickup loading
  • 10K Ohms output impedance when engaged
  • 1% metal-film resistors for consistency
  • High-voltage poly caps for better tone
  • Military-spec circuit board for reliability
  • Easy access battery compartment
  • True hardwire bypass
  • 5-year warranty

BBE Blacksmith BD-69P Distortion Pedal

When Eleven Isn’t Enough

The BBE Blacksmith is deeply inspired by pedals hand-made by Paul Gagon in the ‘80s for the gods of rock.  Back then, Gagon designed pickups and amps for Grover Jackson and worked with an A-list of artists, from Jeff Beck to Steve Vai and many more.  He found that many artists loved the tone of their Marshalls but wanted more grind out of them. Though their amps may have gone “to 11,” these guys told Paul they wanted them to go “to 15 or 20.”  Gagon designed an innovative LED-based distortion circuit which fed a 3-band passive PLEX-EQ based on a classic Plexi tone stack, all adding up to a creamy smooth hi-gain experience that stays true to the tone.

Blacksmith recreates the experience of Gagon’s early hand-made pedals but delivers even greater consistency and durability. Blacksmith features 1% metal-film resistors, high-voltage poly caps, big, fat signal traces on a mil-spec circuit board and a 1MEG Ohm input – just like the input on a classic Marshall.  When the added firepower isn’t needed, true hardwire bypass eliminates any pickup loading so eleven sounds exactly as it should.

FEATURES

  • Gain, volume and passive 3-band PLEX-EQ controls
  • LED-based gain circuit for smooth, high-output distortion
  • 1MEG Ohms input impedance for proper pickup loading
  • 1K Ohms output impedance when engaged
  • 1% metal-film resistors for consistency
  • High-voltage poly caps for better tone
  • Military-spec circuit board for reliability
  • Blue status LED for high visibility and low power consumption
  • True hardwire bypass
  • 5-year warranty

G&L ASAT CLASSIC ‘S’ ALNICO

The Distinctive Sound of Alnico Pickups Now Available in the ASAT Classic ‘S’

Following on the heels of the ASAT Classic Alnico launched in 2012, the G&L crew in Fullerton turned their attention to bringing uncompromising alnico sonic flavor to the three-pickup ASAT Classic ‘S’. The single-coil Alnico V bridge pickup created by Leo Fender and spec’ed by G&L’s Paul Gagon belts out meaty twang that’ll stop you in your tracks. Flip to the Alnico V neck pickup and you’ll discover Gagon’s spec offers a fuller tone that leaves those anemic vintage neck pickups in the dust.

What’s more, the two pickups pair beautifully for an exceptionally sweet, jangly tone bursting with harmonics. But the ASAT Classic ‘S’ Alnico goes even further, with a G&L CLF-100 Alnico V pickup (as used on the G&L Legacy) in the middle. The result is the sweet, evocative “quack” that's familiar yet fresh, while a push/pull tone pot gives you the classic neck/bridge combo as well as all three pickups together, for a unique sonic depth that G&L players love.

Made in the historic G&L facility on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, California, the ASAT Classic ‘S’ Alnico is available with a wide range of custom options including body and neck woods, body and neck finishes, neck profiles and pickguard materials.
MSRP for the ASAT Classic ‘S’ Alnico starts at $1,750.

Special Launch Edition

To commemorate the initial production of these Alnico pickups, G&L has commissioned a special 50-instrument production of ASAT Classic ‘S’ Alnico Launch Edition guitars. The Launch Edition features a Sugar Pine body coated in a gorgeous new Autumn Burst finish. The combination of Sugar Pine and Alnico magnet pickups harks back to early prototype instruments created by Leo Fender. This Launch Edition ‘S’ is a thoughtful blending of the best of old-school Leo with 21st century G&L quality and playability, including Plek fret processing.
MSRP for the ASAT Classic Launch Edition is $2,050.

BBE OptiComp OC-5

Changing the dynamics of playing, one stomp at a time.

BBE is excited to announce its latest release in the world of music dynamics, the OptiComp OC-5.   The OC-5 features the same studio grade compression circuit used in BBE’s award winning BMAX and BMAX-T bass preamps, but in a smaller, more approachable stomp-box.

“We have been listening to our customers, and bassists seem to have the same complaint, dynamics and gigging are all about compromise.  Quality rackmount compressors are the best sounding solution, but stomp-boxes are the most convenient and portable solution.  With the OptiComp OC-5, we have been able to marry the sound of a rack unit with the simplicity of a stomp.  We think this is the best sounding compressor on the market and we know bassists are going to love it!” said Dave McLaren of BBE Sound.

The OC-5 features a beefy mil-spec circuit board with big, fat signal traces, 1 % metal-film resistors and high-voltage poly caps, all backed up by a robust true-hardwire bypass. Whether you’re looking to dial in a smoother sound, or want to keep the front end of your amp from clipping, the OC-5 is the perfect for making your bass sing.

FEATURES
• Studio-grade optical compression
• Output and Threshold controls
• 1MEG Ohms input impedance for proper pickup loading
• 1K Ohms output impedance when engaged
• 1% metal-film resistors for consistency
• High-voltage poly caps for better tone
• Military-spec circuit board for reliability
• Blue status LED for high visibility and low power consumption
• Easy access battery compartment
• True hardwire bypass

G&L ASAT BASS TOM HAMILTON SIGNATURE MODEL

Putting the Punch in the Aerosmith Sound

Aerosmith’s Tom Hamilton has been playing G&L ASAT Basses for nearly twenty years since he bought his first blue metal flake ASAT Bass at 48th Street Custom Guitars in New York City. Since then, G&L has built several more ASAT Basses in a variety of finishes, but there’s something about G&L’s over-the-top metal flake finishes that keeps him coming back for more.

Tom loves the tone, the way the ASAT Bass cuts through the mix in a live setting and the way it tracks beautifully in the studio. Why mess with such a good thing? Well, after listening carefully to Tom’s live performance and studio tracks, G&L VP Engineering Paul Gagon thought he could dial in the pickups to suit Tom’s style even more. Ideas were exchanged and prototypes were built, carefully moving the output and resonant peak until the perfect spec was nailed. Aiden Mullen, Tom’s tech, had this to say:

“The new bass you built for Tom is fantastic, and he started tracking with it like twenty minutes after it arrived. Every G&L we get is excellent, and the new pickups are perfect.”

Today, G&L is proud to introduce the new ASAT Bass Tom Hamilton Signature Model featuring the new “Hamiltone” Magnetic Field Design humbucking pickups mounted in a Western Sugar Pine body for reduced weight and an aged-satin-finished quartersawn maple neck that better withstands the rigors of worldwide touring. Naturally, the model features G&L’s stunning metal flake finishes, available in Blue, Red or Turquoise Metal Flake with a fresh twist: Silver Metal Flake faux double-binding for even more visual pop on stage. Tom’s signature and special caricature are placed discreetly on the rear of the headstock.
MSRP for the ASAT Bass Tom Hamilton Signature Model is $2,665.

G&L FALLOUT

Post-Punk Radiation Morphs Leo Fender's SC-2

What would an ’83 G&L SC-2 be if Leo Fender recreated it for today’s scene? The crew at G&L think it would be a lot like the new Fallout. After all, when inspiration comes from original G&L SC guitars modded by the likes of Devo’s Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Band of Susans’ Robert Poss, there are lots of cues to follow.

The SC-2 was born as a cool looking, comfortable and light axe that could be thrashed mercilessly and not miss a beat. Fallout keeps those qualities in the mix but branches out to cover today’s sophisticated textures and tones.

Fallout shares the original Leo Fender-designed SC-2 body shape, comfortable, sustain-rich G&L Saddle Lock bridge and easy-playing medium-C-shape neck with a 12” radius and medium-jumbo frets.

From dirty riffs to jangly hooks, Fallout delivers with a great pairing of a Paul Gagon-designed G&L Alnico P-90 neck pickup wound in-house and a Seymour Duncan JB bridge humbucker.

The look transcends the SC-2’s simplicity with a sweeping pickguard that complements the body shape perfectly. Balancing out the aesthetics is a sleeker interpretation of the ‘80s-era G&L headstock shape designed exclusively for the new Fallout.
MSRP for the Fallout starts at $1,400.

G&L MADE-IN-FULLERTON SUPERHAWK JERRY CANTRELL MODELS

Badass as a G&L Rampage with More Versatility

Twenty-something years ago, Jerry Cantrell bought his first G&L Rampage while working at a Dallas music store, and he still rocks ‘em hard today. But what Jerry didn’t discover at the time was the G&L Superhawk, a hard-charging model like the Rampage but equipped with twin ‘buckers. That’s changed and so will rock history.

It’s been well over two decades since a Superhawk was last produced. Now G&L is proud to announce the launch of the G&L Superhawk Jerry Cantrell Signature Model, available in two USA-made versions.

The Superhawk starts out with the same soft maple body and fast-playing hard rock maple neck with ebony fingerboard as the Rampage. It even shares the same Seymour Duncan JB pickup in the bridge position, but adds a Seymour Duncan ’59 in the neck position as well as a 3-position pickup selector and tone control with push/pull coil split. The Rampage’s Kahler vibrato is swapped for a G&L Saddle Lock hardtail bridge for improved comfort, stronger sustain and rock-solid tuning stability. This axe is all about capturing the Jerry Cantrell feel while offering more tonal versatility.

After decades of playing Ivory-colored G&L Rampages, Jerry was looking to add some flair to the mix of G&Ls he plays on stage. Superhawk Deluxe answers that call, adding a premium flamed maple top to the soft maple body, with a choice of Blueburst or Blackburst finishes and chrome hardware for contrast.

Look for both new G&L Superhawks on the 2013 Alice In Chains tour.

Boosta Grande Gets Fresh Style and Compact Chassis

The new Boosta Grande is even better with a sweet new look and compact chassis to conserve space on a pedal board.

Just like the original Boosta, the new Boosta Grande BG-20 doesn’t change the tonal balance of an amp, even with its max gain of +20dB slamming those tubes. To achieve a transparent boost experience, Boosta Grande mildly rolls off some top end starting at about 1kHz, so when the tubes are driven harder the additional upper harmonics don’t get shrill.

Boosta Grande’s mission to preserve an amp’s tonal balance ends with careful post-EQ, but it starts by preserving the tone of a guitar. Boosta Grande’s 1MEG Ohms input is similar to the front end of a good Marshall or other premium tube amp, welcoming a guitar’s signal with wide-open arms. In the middle of things, 1% metal-film resistors deliver consistent tone and a rugged mil-spec circuit board provides tour-proven reliability. When Boosta Grande isn’t engaged, a properly engineered true hardwire bypass means signal passes completely around the circuit, from input jack to output jack without a hint of loading.

FEATURES

  • Up to +20dB of transparent clean boost
  • 1MEG Ohms input impedance
  • 1K Ohms output impedance when engaged
  • 1% metal-film resistors for consistency
  • High-voltage poly caps for better tone
  • Military-spec circuit board for reliability
  • Blue status LED for high visibility and low power consumption
  • Easy access battery compartment
  • True hardwire bypass
  • 5-year warranty
