LINE 6 PODx3 LIVE - part 1

Is this the ultimate accessory for recording and performing artists?

"we know of at least two of our reviewers who have since purchased one"

What our reviewer says

There are many effects pedals, amp modulators and stomp boxes to keep you amused and confused for years, however with the advent of communication via the internet, no longer do you have to spend days tweaking for that perfect tone. Search for the sound you want, download it as a pod farm file and send it to your X3 device via Gearbox, and it is done. Now if you desire a unique tone of your own the possibilities are quite endless, if you have the time, it is in there somewhere.
Line 6's pod X3 live is preloaded with superb tones and effects to keep you satisfied no matter how often you switch playing styles. Once you have found the tone there are further enhancements you can make as you go along. The facility of using dual tones just extends the range available, if used correctly this is sure to give your playing an edge. During our testing we did not make use of the recording facility but concentrated on the 'live' use aspect. We found the manual to be a little understated, also it was commented on that if you are an inexperienced computer user, the use of pod farm plug in and gearbox vs. line 6 edit is not so good. These are simple things to overcome, as with all software it takes a little time to become familiar with and once there you never look back.
On the mechanics of the X3 live, it is well constructed and robust yet quite lightweight making it easier to transport. By using the feature of output to pa system any working guitarist is able to travel to a gig with just this device and their chosen guitar, put it through the house pa and you are ready to rock. The wah/volume pedal is smooth, switches on/off easily an improvement on the XT live unit. Switching between patches is simple enough, there is the up down from bank number then you have the four banks A - D to select from, useful to keep similar sounds close together when switching from lead to rhythm.
For the gigging musician, who is doing a wide repertoire of covers, this is an ideal unit, simple patch selection of pre-loaded tones relating to your set and no more tweaking of amps, effects or necessarily changing guitars.
It is also possible to utilise the addition of having your mic through the unit to work alongside varying vocal styles. Even a bass can be added making the distinction of the old XT Live & XT Bass Live units unnecessary.

It is not possible to review this unit fully, in such a short time, to do it justice. We will continue to update this page as often as possible, so please come back again. We hope to be able to combine this unit with a Variax guitar to explore what should be the ultimate portable guitar rig. Also we will go deeper into the recording and twin tone feature.

The best review you can ever give to a product is personal recommendation, well, since we've had this unit, we know of at least two of our reviewers who have since purchased one, enough said

What the manufacturer says

The stage-ready POD® X3 Live represents the true evolution of the now-classic POD® xt Live guitar amp modeller, with an expanded array of 78 guitar amps, from high-wattage heavyweights to boutique beauties and vintage treasures. Guitar amp models are just the beginning: With 24 guitar cabs, 98 stomp box and studio effects, 28 bass amps, 22 bass cabs and six vocal pre amps - POD X3 Live comes complete with the all-around sonic firepower of a top-tier major-label studio, ready to tackle guitar, bass vocals and beyond. What’s more, its larger LCD and smart new editing workflow pages make it easier than ever to find, tweak and save tones. POD X3 Live also offers powerful new dual tone modeling and routing options. Split your single-input guitar or bass signal through two different amp and effect chains simultaneously to create gorgeous new hybrids, or use its dual inputs to individually process two instruments—a microphone and a guitar, for example—at the same time. The Variax® Digital Interface combines the acoustic and electric guitar models of your Variax with the amps, cabs, and effects of your POD X3 Live. With the press of a foot switch, you’ll be playing virtually any combination of guitar, effect and amp. Computer recording enthusiasts will want to exploit POD Farm plug-in, a free download that provides a crucial collection of AU/RTAS®/VST® POD tones, as well as the USB 2.0 connectivity for multi-channel recording and the S/PDIF Stereo Digital Audio Output. In addition to stereo 1/4-inch line outputs (with Amp/Line pad switch) POD X3 Live boasts stereo XLR balanced line outputs for the best possible live signal. There’s also a digital Variax® connection that combines the acoustic and electric guitar models of your Variax with the amps, cabs, and effects of your POD X3 Live. With the press of a foot switch, you’ll be playing virtually any combination of guitar, effect and amp. When you hit the stage with the sleek and rugged brushed-aluminum POD X3 Live (with its racecar-inspired built-in expression pedal), you’ll be outfitted with even more of the flexibility and timeless tones that have made POD the global standard for the discriminating guitarist.
